NCG MaroccoIn March 2012 most of the nationally-based activities of the Euromed Civil Society Programme have been launched, starting with the establishment of the National Coordination Groups (NCGs) in the countries involved by the Programme. These Groups represent a coordination tool of civil society Organizations which they will voluntarily join.

Besides identifying needs, interest centres and priorities of the civil society of the country involved, NCGs are tasked with, on one hand, proposing mechanisms capable of organizing dialogue between civil society and public authorities. On the other hand, they must put forward propositions in the field of civil society consultation and participation on occasion of the preparation and implementation of Agreements, Plans and Programmes identified in the framework of the Euromed process (Euro-Mediterranean Partnership, European Neighbourhood Policy and the Union for the Mediterranean).

Upon the decision of the Consortium ensuring the Programme’s Technical Assistance and with the endorsement of the European Commission, it was decided to move the head office of the Programme from Brussels to Tunis. The reason behind this decision lays in the relevant role the Tunisian civil society has played in bringing about the democratic change in Tunisia and in the consequent opportunities for the Programme to better operate in favour of the Euro-Mediterranean civil society given the new and enhanced situation of the Country : a model of change for the Arab world at large.

The new head office, operative since January 2012, is located in 17, Rue Abou Bakr Essedik – 1002 Tunis (telephone: +216 71 784 854).

« Revolution », « Spring », « Renaissance », « Awakening »: apart from denominations and semantic debates, the events occurring in the Arab countries from the beginning of 2011 give evidence of an extraordinary turning point that has lead and will be leading to remarkable effects in the Region and the world at large. What most impressed the world public opinion is the role played by civil society both traditionally and newly (social networks, blogs, etc.) organized.
